Babies cry if they are hungry, upset, wet, cold, or sleepy. Of course, they can also cry from boredom, anger, or colic. New parents are often particularly upset by a baby’s unrelenting cry and they often get more upset than the little one. They become frustrated because they are not able to communicate and figure out what the problem is. It is not uncommon to hear parents of newborn babies complaining that they have colicky babies because they are always crying and never soothed.
Colic does exist, and it can be very uncomfortable to a little infant, but it is not always the culprit. One of the best things that parents can do, when their baby is having a crying jag, is to stay patient and calm. The next thing that they need to do is to rationally and methodically try to determine what the problem with their baby actually is.
This can only be accomplished if parents remain calm, because a baby will sense any hostility or nervous behavior on your part. If you are nervous, upset, or frustrated, the baby will feel this and will become even more vigorous in his cries. This can quickly become a spinning circle of emotional edginess for everyone that worsens by the moment.
Pick your baby up and first let him know that everything will be okay. Hearing your calm murmurs and words may work to quiet him, but even if baby continues to cry, you should just keep up some quiet, reassuring words. Check the diaper
Look at his skin to see if he has an insect bite or rash. You can now try to walk around the room while holding him and patting him. He might only have a little gas and need to burp. Feel his little belly to see if it is firm or distended. If he is near the age of teething, check his gums for swelling. Offer him a bottle and sit with him in a rocker.
Let him rest against your chest where your heartbeat may calm him. You can even take your baby outdoors, sometimes fresh air will help. Some parents have found that a ride in a car or a stroller ride will soothe a fretful little one.
Do not expect the crying to magically stop just because you pick a baby up…..something created a situation where he needed to communicate his feelings and crying is the one way he knows to let people know that something is wrong. The only thing we can do is work with him through trial and error to try to remedy the situation.
