Enjoy The Moment Of Your Newborn

New parents are swept up in the excitement of having new babies in their homes and sometimes get caught in that fast forward speed that accompanies newborns and toddlers. That little bundle of joy that you are holding in your arms today is going to be up and running around your household almost before you can blink. One of the best pieces of advice to give parents is to “enjoy the moment”.

These precious times of discovery, bonding and new experiences will be swept away in the rush of months and years that lie ahead. If you are dwelling in the past or thinking of the future, you will lose the memories that are being formed now. If your baby is cooing and kicking while looking at one of the mobiles, enjoy this with him. Touch him, tickle him, smile at him, and share this experience with him. You will find that your baby would far rather be entertained by you or have you involved than simply watch a mobile spin aimlessly around. When you are an active participant, you and your baby are both enjoying the moment.

Taking this advice to heart will help you when you are faced with those more trying times that deal with babies who have colic, sniffles, allergies or fevers. These are the times when parents begin to spin future scenarios in their imaginations and think of what could be instead of dealing with the moment ...and “what is”. Babies can present parents with some scary and frustrating moments as they grow and experience all types of life experiences, but these are all swiftly passing episodes.

When babies are not feeling well they will respond better when their parents can stay focused on how to make things better at the actual moment. There is no reason to increase your stress level and get off track by imagining worst-case scenarios or counting the minutes until your little one goes to sleep and you can go to bed. This is living in the future and not in the moment at hand.

There are going to be many times when you will find that the problems seem much more manageable if you understand that this is simply a moment in time that is quickly passing. Facing these trying experiences with humor, patience and a commitment to deal with what is at hand now will help you care for your baby with a relaxed and calm attitude. Even the fussiest babies will feel this patient energy of the parents and they will be less fretful and feel more secure. Teething frustrations and colic will pass and you and your little one will bond even closer as you both deal with the matter as it happens. Your baby is in fast forward mode from the day he is born so you may have to remind yourself to slow down so that you can enjoy the moment and the wonderful ride that you are sharing.
